Management Tools for Prescribed Burning for Tallgrass Prairie Restoration at the Lewisville Lake Environmental Learning Area

Library Holdings. The Lewisville Lake Environmental Learning Area (LLELA) is a wildlife management area with tallgrass prairie, an endangered ecosystem. Essential ecosystem processes, especially fire, are part of restoration. To support fire management efforts at LLELA and surrounding areas, this project evaluated and developed tools for fire restoration. The four primary prairie grasses respond favorably to burning. Fuel loads and fuel models vary by scale and survey method. One- and 10-hour fuel moisture can be predicted using a statistical model; 100- and 1,000-hour fuel moisture cannot. Historic weather data suggests that burning can occur when it is most effective. The production of ozone precursors produced by burning is comparable to those emitted every six minutes by regional automobiles. Read More

Aviation and the Global Atmosphere: Summary for Policymakers

The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) was jointly established by the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) and the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) in 1988 to: (i) assess available information on the science, the impacts, and the economics of, and the options for mitigating and/or adapting to, climate change and (ii) provide, on request, scientific/technical/socio-economic advice to the Conference of the Parties (COP) to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC). Since then the IPCC has produced a series of Assessment Reports, Special Reports, Technical Papers, methodologies, and other products that have become standard works of reference, widely used by policymakers, scientists, and other experts. This Special Report was prepared following a request from the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) and the Parties to the Montreal Protocol on Substances that Deplete the Ozone Layer. The state of understanding of the relevant science of the atmosphere, aviation technology, and socio-economic issues associated with mitigation options is assessed and reported for both subsonic and supersonic fleets. The potential effects that aviation has had in the past and may have in the future on both stratospheric ozone depletion and global climate change are covered; environmental impacts of aviation at the local scale, however, are not addressed. The report synthesizes the findings to identify and characterize options for mitigating future impacts. Read More

To achieve this mission, EPA implements a variety of programs under the Clean Air Act that focus on reducing outdoor, or ambient, concentrations of air pollutants that cause smog, haze, acid rain, and other problems; reducing emissions of toxic air pollutants that are known to, or are suspected of, causing cancer or other serious health effects; and phasing out production and use of chemicals that destroy stratospheric ozone. Climate Change: Ozone Depletion

At low levels of Earth’s atmosphere, ozone is a pollutant with serious effects on the respiratory systems of animals, but in the upper atmosphere it plays a crucial role in preventing harmful ultraviolet radiation from reaching the Earth’s surface. This is the ozone layer. Ozone in the atmosphere affects climate because of its interaction with energy coming from the sun. This incoming energy is spread among different wavelengths of light. We can see light that is in the visible range of the spectrum, but we cannot see the others, like ultraviolet or infrared light. All the wavelengths, including visible light, have energy (and thus heat) associated with them. Read More
