Solar water heating systems have a good economic payoff, and are manageable systems to install and maintain. Some of the solar water heating designs are simple and low cost.

Some of the information below is for simple homemade batch style solar hot water heaters that make a simple, low cost DIY project. In cold climates, these batch heaters will need to be drained during the cold winter months, but still provide large savings during the rest of the year. Alternatively, a closed loop or drainback system can be operated year round in cold climates. These systems are a more ambitious projects, but still within the skill level of many DIYers.
