The Center conducts research on cogeneration systems and promotes cogeneration technology. Upon its founding in 1985, 67 cogeneration systems with total capacity of 200,000 kilowatts were in operation in Japan. As of March 2003, as many as 4,515 systems were in operation with capacity totaling 6.5 million kilowatts.
